Newly Qualified Teachers (NQT) in Sully Primary School

An NQT is a teacher who has just attained Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), and is now undertaking an induction programme that enables them to be legally employed as a teacher in a maintained school.

Currently at Sully Primary we have one NQT who is linked with a class teacher who acts as their ‘Internal Mentor’, offering advice and support and observing lessons.  NQTs have an afternoon a week to attend courses, observe experienced teachers and evaluate their teaching, all of which further develop their teaching skills.

Our current NQT are Mrs L Arkontopoulos(Reception) and her internal mentor is Mrs C Heaton (Reception).

We are also fortunate to have two experienced External Verifiers at Sully School:  Mrs A Waddington, one of the first to be appointed, and Miss S Harries.  External Verifiers work alongside the NQTs and their internal mentors.

Student Placements

Sully Primary has long-established links with Cardiff Met, Bath Spa and the University of South Wales (Newport).

Students are placed in a class with a teacher who is their Class Mentor.  The Class Mentor is vital in the development of the student, offering guidance, support, coaching and mentoring as well as observing lessons.

The process is overseen by our two experienced senior mentors, Miss K Martin and Miss C Price.

Students are valuable assets to any school and we pride ourselves on helping future teachers develop the necessary skills to become accomplished members of the profession.
