In Sully Primary School, we believe it is important for our children to understand the role they play as responsible global citizens. It is important for our children to recognise and respect the many different languages and cultures that exist within the UK, Europe and the wider world.
With over one billion speakers worldwide, the global significance of Mandarin Chinese cannot be denied. This is why we introduce Chinese Mandarin to our children from Nursery to Year 6.
Over a number of years, we have developed a successful relationship with the Confucius Institute of Cardiff. With their support we have secured a grant that allows us to employ a native Chinese Mandarin speaker to instruct our children in the language-we even have dedicated staff who are learning Chinese Mandarin in their own time to assist our pupils in their learning.
Alongside the language instruction, we also celebrate the culture and traditions of China. Each year we celebrate a ‘China week’ across the school where our pupils experience Chinese food, dance, calligraphy and much more.
We have a number of links and memorandums of understanding with schools and regions of China, Sully staff have recently visited our partner schools in China to share teaching and learning techniques and pedagogy.
Our pupils also enjoy collaborating with Chinese students via literacy projects where they get the opportunity to learn traditional Chinese tales whilst we introduce Chinese students to William Shakespeare.
We believe that by giving our children experience of Chinese Mandarin, it will unlock doors of the future and give them limitless lifelong opportunities.
