We have recently been awarded our Bronze Award by the Foundation for Community Engagement for our work in engaging with families and the local community. Examples of our work include:

  • PTA – We have a very active PTA that includes a cross-section of families from across the school. The PTA have organised a range of events over the last 12 months including a very successful Summer fete, a Christmas market event and a range of discos. They have also funded the purchase of resources for the school.
  • Parent Forum – The Parent Forum meets at least once per term and is a chance for parents and carers to have a voice in the life of the school. The Forum (ideally) has a representative from every class in the school so that there is effective communication across the whole-school population.
  • Cymuned Llais Group – The Cymuned group are our Pupil Voice group who coordinate some of our community involvement activities. This year they have been working on developing a community calendar highlighting significant events happening within the community, and creating and sending Christmas cards to local elderly residents.
  • Whole-School Events – We have organised a range of whole-school and year group events during this academic year. Examples include; open afternoons, enterprise projects, celebration weeks and exhibitions of work.
  • Trips and Visitors – Where possible we try to use our local community as much as possible to enhance our curriculum. We use the beach as a place to carry out learning activities on a regular basis and our older pupils have started to walk along the coast paths to gain a deeper understanding of our position on the coast. All classes visit the library every term and local visitors have visited school as part of our curriculum, for example, cricket coaches, community police officers, the fire service, the local Vicar and local architects and farmers.
  • Fundraising – We raise money for a range of charities every year and try to direct our fundraising efforts at local causes wherever possible. Examples include: raising money for Ty Hafan, collecting food for the Food Pod in Penarth and supporting the Vale of Glamorgan’s Santa Cause initiative.
  • Community Events – We involve ourselves in as many community events as possible including the choir singing at the local church, attending the community song-along, displaying our work in a local art exhibition, displaying products at the Village Show and attending the community craft fayre.
  • School Initiatives – We have started a number of school initiatives designed to support our families. Examples include: our school uniform pod and a Christmas jumper pod.
