FROM MRS WADDINGTON:
On behalf of the staff at Sully PS, it is a pleasure to welcome you back to a new school year. I hope you all had a wonderful summer break and are now ready for a busy and exciting year ahead. A special welcome to all our new pupils and parents; I hope you will all be very happy here.
I would like to say how pleased I am to be your Acting Headteacher whilst Mr Williams undertakes his yearlong secondment with the Central South Consortium. This is a very special school and one which I feel extremely honoured to lead.
As the Acting Headteacher, I will always make time to talk to parents so please do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss any issues or ask questions. When possible, I will aim to be in the playgrounds and/or reception area at the beginning and end of each day.
We will continue our practice of sending out weekly newsletters. Please take the time to read through them in order for you to be clear about the events taking place through the year.
During the summer break the local authority has been busy refurbishing our KS2 and FP toilets. They are now looking extremely smart and the children are loving using them. Our thanks go to Mr Cook and Vale of Glamorgan Buildings and Maintenance team for the work they have undertaken on behalf of our children.
As usual our caretaker, Mr Colin Starling, has been working exceedingly hard during the summer holidays. Along with all his usual chores he managed to find the time to paint a few of our classrooms. He was ably assisted in this endeavour by one of our parent volunteers, Mr Paul Smith. A huge thank you Mr Smith, we are extremely grateful for your generosity and hard work. Whilst on this subject, we are hoping to continue the task of painting the inside of the school throughout this academic year and if anybody would like to volunteer to help during the Autumn Half Term week we would be very grateful.
As a school, we are forever seeking ways in which to improve our practice and as such we have now finalised our School Improvement Plan for 2019-20.
Finally I would like to thank the staff and governors for their hard work and commitment to the school. We will continue to work closely together to ensure your child receives the best possible education.
PARKING OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL
May we again request that you park with consideration both for our neighbours and for your children’s safety. Please do not cover drives or park on the verges and respect the voluntary one-way system.
If you are using the main Burnham Avenue gate, please drive down Burnham and continue along Smithies Avenue before turning up Weston Avenue or Clevedon Avenue onto South Road. If you use the Minehead Avenue gate, then please drive down Minehead towards the school and continue around Minehead Avenue in a complete circuit.
THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN IS OUR PRIMARY CONCERN.
You may wish to talk to your child about the extracurricular clubs that will be on offer throughout the Autumn term. Attached is a copy of the clubs list – they will commence during the week beginning the 16th September and children will be asked whether or not they would like to join clubs during next week.
Further details of the non-school run clubs will follow in due course.
PERSONALISED ASSESSMENT FOR NUMERACY (PROCEDURAL)
As with all other schools last year, our pupils took the online personalised assessment for Numeracy (Procedural). You will have received or viewed a report containing the age-standardised score in your child’s most recent assessment.
Personalised assessments provide us with information on a child’s skills, allowing our teachers to offer tailored support to help your child’s progress.
A minor issue was identified in the calculations for the age-standardised scores, so Welsh Government has now made changes to correct this. As a result, there may be a slight adjustment in your child’s score. Updated reports will be available for schools from the beginning of October.
The age-standardised score is just one piece of information that we have on your child’s skills, and movement of a few points will not affect our teaching and learning plans for your child.
We will however, send out revised reports in October. In the meantime, if you would like any further information on this matter please do not hesitate to contact us.
A reminder that school meals are now £2.30 a day, payable in advance please, via ParentPay.
MIDDAY SUPERVISORS NEEDED
We are once again seeking midday supervisors, specifically for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. If you, or anyone you know, may be interested, please contact the school office.
Our Harvest Festival celebration this year will take place on Friday 11th October. As in previous years we will be collecting food for the Vale Foodbank who have requested that this year we collect pasta sauce, tinned vegetables and rice pudding.
Please bring your donations in to school on the morning of that day ready for the foodbank volunteers to collect them after lunch.
Thank you in anticipation of your usual generous donations.
